HOPE AMIDST TRAGEDY IN
CHICAGO PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Photographed by Jon Lowenstein

Recently the media spotlight has focused on the violent deaths of public school children in Chicago’s poorest neighborhoods. Yet the hyper-coverage has paid seemingly little attention to the social contexts which produced the violence and it has fueled the public’s perception of Chicago schools as brutal and chaotic places where little positive happens. Award-winning photojournalist Jon Lowenstein, who taught at a middle school on Chicago’s South Side, brings us a rich and nuanced view of the daily life of one Chicago inner-city school.
